I’d always been rather a cynic about the early onslaught of Christmas. We’d lived in London for 10 years, and like other Londoners had bemoaned the appearance of Christmas decorations in shop windows the moment autumn arrived. But this year, our first in our cottage in the Cotswolds, I couldn’t wait to get the festivities started. My impatience was clearly contagious, because upon opening her curtains one November morning to see the village cloaked in a blanket of snow, our 2 year old daughter Lily gleefully announced ‘Its snowed – Father Christmas must have come! Lets open our presents!’
